Stowmarket | Priory Cottage: SIP Self Build House Project

About the project

ARCHITECT: GMcK

CLIENT & PROJECT MANAGER: GMcK

PROJECT TYPE: Self build house

PRODUCTS: 175mm SIP Walls, 175mm SIP Roof

SIPBuild UK worked with the architects to construct a five-bedroom self-build house on a green field site where a bungalow had previously stood.

To ensure planning permission was granted the architects had to work within the planning constraints, which dictate the plot including land has to be 0.17 hectares or less to avoid affordable housing penalties levied by councils on larger sites.

The house was designed in a traditional Suffolk style with a steep pitched roof over the five bedroom property which also has three en-suite bathrooms, a family bathroom, open plan kitchen/diner, study, reception area, dining hall and living room.

The owner chose Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) for the build over a timber frame structure because of the speed of construction and superior thermal properties.

SIPBuild UK was on site for around four weeks and the total project time from demolishing the existing bungalow to a finished house was just nine months.

Around 20,000 people build their own home in the UK every year and it’s estimated self-builders spend around £2bn on the land and build costs.

SIPs are a quick, environmentally friendly and robust building technology that’s been tried and tested around the world.

SIPBuild UK walks you through the process step by step, from supporting your architect to specify the build to working with you on-site until you have a watertight structure ready for you to put your personal stamp on.
